Beating the heat: sleeping cool in PH weather
Your body needs to cool by about 1°C to fall asleep. In a humid Philippine bedroom, that drop is hard to come by — which is why hot nights wreck your rest.
Cool the room
- Aim for 24–26°C. If you use aircon, a timer that runs the first few hours is often enough — that's when your deepest sleep happens.
- Move air, not just cool it. A fan on low across the bed helps sweat evaporate. Cross-ventilation beats a stuffy sealed room.
- Block the afternoon heat. Curtains closed during the day keep the room from baking by bedtime.
Cool the bed (and you)
- Breathable cotton or bamboo sheets over polyester — they wick instead of trap.
- A warm (not cold) shower an hour before bed. It sounds backwards, but it pulls heat to your skin and helps your core drop afterward.
- Light, loose sleepwear — or none.
Humidity is the hidden villain. Even at 26°C, high humidity stops sweat from evaporating. A fan or a dehumidifier can matter more than another degree of cooling.
