Basics
How much sleep do Filipino adults really need?
For most adults, the answer is 7 to 9 hours a night. Not 5. Not "whatever I can get."
The "I only need 5 hours" badge of honour is, for almost everyone, a misread. A tiny fraction of people are true short-sleepers (a rare genetic trait). The rest of us who run on 5 hours aren't thriving — we've just gotten used to being tired, and we underestimate how impaired we are.
Quick reference
- Adults (18–64): 7–9 hours
- Older adults (65+): 7–8 hours
- Teens: 8–10 hours
Quality counts too. Eight hours that are constantly interrupted (by snoring, a hot room, or a 3 AM phone check) won't feel like eight hours. Aim for enough and unbroken.
A simple test: if you need an alarm to wake and you're sleepy by mid-afternoon most days, you're probably under-slept — not "just tired."
